COMPETITION FOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Announces an open competition for the development of IT-based resources
for teaching concepts to be used for teaching science to rural school
children in the age group 7 ? 10 years (class V ? VII ).
The resource to be developed is for the topic of Water with the scope
extending from properties to use and importance in daily life.

The competition consists of the following categories:
A. Developing and delivering a software module.  
B. Developing and submitting a detailed ?script? that can be IT enabled. 

The rules/guidelines governing the competition in category A are as
follows:

Content should be aimed at developing pertinent concepts through use of
text, graphics, audio/video  clips, animations and examples from everyday
life and incorporate as much user interaction as possible. The module
should ?run? for about 20 to 30 minutes.

It should be built on open/free software; for example, Open GL on a
GNU/Linux platform.

The general rules/guidelines governing the competition are as follows:

It may be in any Indian language including English.

Entries may be submitted on-line to sec@serc.iiit.net or on floppy/CD to
?Science Education Competition?, International Institute of Information
Technology, Gachi Bowli, Hyderabad 500 019.

Entries will be judged by an evaluation team comprising science teachers,
educationists, IT experts and planners. Evaluation will be based on
effectiveness of communication, novelty of ideas, pedagogical content and
technical quality.

The decision of the evaluation team will be final and not open to
discussion.

Prizes will be awarded to the best entries as follows:

                          One first prize of          Rs.20,000
                          Two second prizes of  Rs.10,000 each
                          Two third prizes of      Rs.5,000 each

Authors of prize winning entries will have the opportunity of
participating in a larger developmental  programme involving content
creation for a wide ranging school curriculum to be implemented in
schools and non-formal institutions country-wide. Appropriate
remuneration/ commercial rights/ IPRs would apply for all such
contributions.

The last dates for receipt of entries are: 15th May 2002 for category A
and 15 April 2002 for category B. Results are expected to be announced by
15th August 2002.
