Hello All,
I gave one more shot at trying to play VCDs and DVDs in Ubuntu 6.10 on
my desktop. All instructions given on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats were followed but
still VCDs would not be opened in Totem. A DVD would play upto the menu
but the 'Play' link that comes after that on the screen would not come
and the screen would simply remain blank.
From the net a useful page was found
http://alternativenayk.wordpress.com/2007/01/20/playing-vcds-on-ubuntu-linux-how-to/
Using apt, gxine and gxineplugins packages were downloaded and that
finally helped in playing VCDs as well as DVDs. Gxine has good audio
settings options that allow you to set audio levels in order to avoid
distortion.
The same procedure was followed in the Acer 2428 laptop running Edubuntu
6.06 LTS. I am able to get videos for VCDs as well as DVD but no sound.
The system too did not have sound so some ALSA packages were downloaded
based on their look and feel. System sound is up but no movie sounds. I
am able to record my voice using 'Sound Recorder' but the playback is
faint.
Could anyone help me out on this? I am willing to get the lappy to your
office at your convenience.
Regards,
Rony.
