It also depends upon what do you mean by exporting the desktop. If you really 
want to export the desktop that is visible to another person, then i agree 
that you need to get VNC. But if you want your own session you can do it by 
exporting the DISPLAY variable as explained by philip, just the you have to 
run the correct program. You can run gnome-session to get the Desktop if you 
are running gnome.
