Figured it out from my own mail. Mutt (rather gnome-terminal) is
unable to display the conjuct consonants correctly. It unpacks the
symbols which reveal the key strokes invloved.

So I type the sequence 'ನ  ್ ನ' to get 'ನ್ನ'! ಭಲೆ!
