That is a misinterpretation or misrepresentation of the news. The W3C
cannot patent anything which it did not invent.

story. As of now it is only a draft proposal which, essentially, would
allow already patented or patentable technology to be accepted as a
W3C standard. Of course, that in itself is disgusting and highly
deplorable. Hopefully, the proposal will not go through.
