    I am a software engineer working with IBM India. At a personla level,I am
    interested in efforts towards making computers and software meaningful to
    the larger deprived, non-elite  section in my country.

Free software ought to help make this possible.  You can contact the
organizers of the FSF India at fsf-india@gnu.org.in.  They are
interested in spreading the use of free software in India; if you want
to work with them, you can.
