Diary of an open source developer workshop:
Independent journalist Frederick Noronha
blogged his way through the Asia Source open
source developer workshop in India earlier this
year. Now he has collected all his writings
over the entire workshop and released them as a
small book which offers a fascinating insight
into the state of open source software, not
only in Asia, but throughout the world.
SA partners to participate in global free
software study: The CSIR and the University of
the Western Cape have been selected to
participate in a two-year global study on free
and open source software.
X Factor - understanding the X window system:
Unix systems and their derivatives, including
Linux, these days have one major thing in
common. They all use the same system as the
back end for their graphical interfaces. This
system is called the X window system, or more
commonly X.

Skills deficit still dogs open source software
in Africa - report: Bridges.org this week
released the findings of its study on the use
of free/open source and proprietary software in
public computer centres in Africa. It found
that where free software was well-implemented
there were many advantages but FOSS still faces
many challenges to widespread adoption. It also
found that many of the preceived advantages of
free software - such as cost - were not
realised in Africa.
CSIR's open source centre evolves: Around R50
million a year to be pumped into growing the
number , and quality of technical skills in
South Africa through learnerships, increased
research and new technologies.

The security conscious will be pleased with the
