While the threat of patents is very real, I think the kopete page saying
the site thas shut down is merely the part of a campaign against
software patents. No patents have been asserted against it yet. The link
to patents which are applicable dates back to 2003.

If anything all these commercial IM systems uses each other patented
features. Either they have all been cross-licencing all these while, or
they all have to get these licences.
